Now for the top five. The Browning X-Bolt Max Long Range was one of the lightest contestants. Meant as a crossover long-range target/hunting rifle, it brings a super-slick action with three lugs and a short 60-degree throw to the table. The 6.5 Creedmoor chambering offers a bit more recoil for such a light rifle, but the added muzzle brake is very effective. The three-round detachable box magazine was also easy to use. Other features include a fluted, 26-inch, stainless steel barrel and a Composite Max stock that allows you to adjust the cheek height and length of pull.

I was a little concerned at first that the X-Bolt wouldn’t stand a chance among the more target-focused entries, but I was definitely wrong. The rifle feels extremely solid despite its light weight, and when you run the action, you can’t help but smile.

A couple of shooters posted excellent five-shot groups well under an inch, although such a round count should’ve worked against the pencil-thin barrel. The X-Bolt didn’t garner any notable negative comments outside of the trigger being a bit heavy, but the break was extremely clean. The X-Bolt just played the middle of the road well and posted good numbers from everyone, including those of us who like heavier rifles. Add in the excellent MSRP of $1,300 and you’ve got an unlikely contender.
