Browning’s new X-Bolt Max Long Range features a Max stock found on select Browning X-Bolt rifles, which is designed to help improve shooter fit. Its composite stock offers an adjustable comb to dial in eye-to-scope alignment and looks pretty cool with its black and gray textured stock finish. Barrel and action are stainless steel. This X-Bolt version is fitted with a fluted heavy sporter barrel. Firing the stiff 6.5 PRC, its Recoil Hawg muzzle brake reduces recoil up to 73 percent. We liked that it included a thread protector, since unprotected hearing in hunting situations is not advised.
The rifle handled and ran well, and an extended bolt handle made reloading the rifle a breeze. On the down side, the trigger felt a bit “creepy,” but still managed to break cleanly enough to print a sub-MOA group. Among all shooters at all ranges, this rifle averaged 1.37 MOA. With a MSRP of $1,379 it leaned in the direction of a good value for the price.
