In 2020, we were excited to evaluate the new 4.5-inch-barrel Colt Python. I was even more excited when I learned that Colt was introducing a 3-inch model. The appearance of the new Python is a faithful rendition of the original. However, the new family of Pythons is a real improvement over the original. Colt made changes to the frame, making the Python stronger and more durable. The action has been simplified and redesigned to make it easier to manufacture while retaining the classic Python action. The finish on the Python is mirror bright while all the edges are softly rounded. The rear sight is fully adjustable, and the front sight features a red ramp insert. One nice feature is the front sight can be changed by the user. We did notice significant play in the rear sight base. We had noticed this on the previous Python we tested and it is something Colt should address.
The double action was very smooth and classic Colt and generally received high marks. Shooters noticed that the action had less stacking than the original models. After shooting, evaluators tended to mark the Python down in both the sights and ergonomics category due to the grips. On the range, we found the rear sight notch was shallow and made the front sight difficult to track. The grips, while attractive, made maintaining a proper grip during recoil somewhat difficult. The 3-inch barrel seemed to be the perfect length and gave the Python great handling and balance. The Python is really a great pistol and its one shortcoming can easily be corrected. I hope that Colt will bring out a 2.5-inch version or maybe a blued, or DLC-finished version. It was noted that the Python’s MSRP of $1,499 has not changed since 2020. The Python had an average score of 4 or greater in aesthetics, trigger control, recoil control, accuracy and value. The total score for the 3-inch Python was 36.88.
