One of Colt’s most iconic handguns is the Python. Introduced in 1955, it stayed in product for 50 years and was discontinued in 2005. In 2020 a 2nd Generation of Pythons debuted. These iterations had a heavier frame with 30% more steel below the rear sight, plenty of metal around the forcing cone, a redesigned action with a V-spring for a smooth trigger pull, and an interchangeable front sight. They were first offered in stainless-steel and within the past several months polished blued models have appeared. Recently, a new Python version was introduced with a no-frills matte blued finish. Barrel lengths offered are 2.5, 3.0, 5.0 and 8.0 inches. The test gun was a 2.5-inch with service-style checkered walnut grips. During chronographing, accuracy testing, and combat shooting, some 101 rounds of 5 different .357 Magnum loads were shot in the 39 oz. Python. The best 5-shot group measured 1.02 inches, shot SA at 12 yards from a rest. The test gun has an overall length of 8.0 inches and the MSRP is $1,499.00; street prices range from $1189-1299.00.
