In the 1990’s Smith & Wesson introduced a revolver series called the Mountain Gun. The primary feature that set these wheelguns apart was their tapered barrels with half-length ejector rod shrouds. Most guns in the series were also made from stainless-steel, and chambered in .357, .41 and .44 Magnum, plus .45 Colt. They were discontinued in 2005. Earlier this year, firearms distributor Lipsey’s in collaboration with S&W, brought back the Mountain Gun in .357 and .44 Magnum. Now, mid-year they have introduced two new Mountain Guns, the Model 610 in 10mm, and the Model 617 in .22 LR.
I received a Model 617-7 for T&E from Lipsey’s. It differs from the original Mountain Guns as it has a patridge-type gold bead front sight, a forward cylinder locking point on the front of the frame, and sports smooth walnut Bear Hug grips from Tyler Gun Works. This .22 LR version has a 10-shot cylinder, fully adjustable rear sight, and a round-butt grip frame. The barrel length is 4.125 inches, overall length is 9.1 inches, and the empty weight is 36 oz., MSRP is $1,199.00. For more information go to www.smith-wesson.com.
