Since its introduction, the success of the Korth series of pistols has proven that there is indeed a market for high-end revolvers. The Mongoose is a medium-frame revolver that is similar in size to the Smith & Wesson K frame. It is made in Germany by Korth Waffen and is imported by Nighthawk Custom. For this year’s roundup, we received a sample of the new 3-inch Mongoose. As with the Python the 3-inch underlug barrel gives the Mongoose perfect balance. With a unique roller design, the double action is the smoothest and lightest of any revolver in the group. Shooters did notice the double-action resistance lightened significantly post cylinder lockup. This required some concentration during range testing. The adjustable rear sight is all black and is paired with a gold bead front sight that provided an excellent sight picture. Unlike a traditional adjustable rear sight, windage adjustments are made by tightening a screw and reversing an opposing screw. The gold bead made sight acquisition and tracking very easy.
The cylinder release is a uniquely designed lever that is located on the frame just behind the hammer. Shooters quickly became familiar with this feature and found it easier to manipulate than a side-mounted release. Our test gun came with Hogue Monogrip grips which provided a positive gripping surface and excellent recoil control. The combination of the excellent action, sights and grips also allowed shooters to score well in the accuracy category. The black rear sight combined with the front gold bead was, by far, the favorite combination of the shooters. In fact, the Korth produced the highest scores of the test in both accuracy and recoil. On the range, the Korth proved to be an all-star with an average score of 4 or greater in every performance category. At $3,999, evaluators rated a surprisingly high value and price average of 3.38 with an overall score of 40.27.
