On the other hand, some companies like Sig Sauer don’t mind making a big splash, especially where its new P320 Max is concerned. Essentially a re-jiggered P320 X5 Legion, the P320 MAX is a slightly different concept for a race gun that forgoes iron sights completely in favor of the new ROMEO3 MAX red-dot optic. In addition to the removal of the iron sights, the slide was machined with serrations on the top as well as the sides for easier and faster manipulation.
Like the X5 Legion, the P320 MAX incorporates a tungsten-infused grip module that provides the weight of a steel frame but still gives it the flex of polymer for better recoil absorption. The package also similarly includes a 5-inch, target-grade barrel, a full-length, steel guide rod and two different 1911-style recoil springs to tune the pistol to the user’s preferred load. The P320 MAX also uses the same skeletonized trigger as the X5 Legion, which is supposed to offer a 30 percent reduction in pull weight.

Sig Sauer reports that the P320 MAX was optimized for the USPSA’s Carry Optics division, though that division doesn’t allow the use of magazine wells like the one found on the P320 MAX. I guess it’s a simple matter of removing it. However, the ROMEO3 MAX red-dot optic is allowed and was designed in conjunction with Sig’s team captain Max Michel.
The unit that ships with the P320 MAX has a 6-MOA red dot that can be adjusted to 12 different brightness levels. The ROMEO3 MAX is powered by a single 2032 battery that can be loaded in a side compartment so the unit does not have to be removed, upsetting zero. The battery is rated for over 20,000 hours of constant-on operation, which is a little over two years. The unit also has Sig’s MOTAC motion-sensing system that will turn on the red-dot once movement is detected and then turn off the red-dot when no movement is detected for a period of time.
The P320 MAX includes all the modern features and ergo goodness you would expect from a pistol with an MSRP of $1,599. There’s a reversible mag release, an ambi slide stop and a Picatinny rail for your favorite weapon light. To sweeten the pot, Sig also includes four 21-round magazines that should be enough to get your start on the competitive circuit.
