Made in Brazil, the Taurus 1911 Commander in .45 ACP features a number of interesting upgrades we don’t normally see on an economy gun, such as real Novak sights, a checkered frontstrap and extended thumb and beavertail safeties. Though the fit and finish of the gun won’t measure up to a true 1911 aficionado’s standards, the gun did perform reasonably well, with no stoppages to report.
Our test gun’s trigger pull measured 6.25 pounds and most likely affected my groups adversely. An adept gun plumber could slick this gun up without any problems, as all 1911 aftermarket parts will fit the Taurus. That said, I was particularly impressed that this gun turned in solid 2-inch groups at 25 yards. The best group came with the Black Hills 230-grain FMJs at just 1.32 inches. The Aguila and Hornady loads created groups measuring 1.93 and 2.01 inches, respectively. All in all, with a suggested retail price of $603, the Taurus is another option for budget-conscious 1911 fans.
