Colt’s M5 series represents a major engineering update of their AR platform receiver focused around full ambidexterity on the lower and enhancing accuracy and durability with a new upper with an integral extended nose that allows for the most solid mounting of a free float handguard of any maker. Unlike a long barrel nut, the extended nose doesn’t act as a lever to deflect the barrel and offers better heat dissipation too. The new M5 barrels and barrel nuts mount down inside this extended nose in about the same location, but completely isolated from handguard mount. A Radian Raptor ambidextrous charging handle is standard too.
The lower has reinforced trigger and hammer pin holes and what may be the best ambidextrous controls on any AR platform. The only thing that isn’t ambidextrous is the forward assist. The M5 comes ready to shoot with excellent Troy Industries flip-up battle sights, a Magpul, PMAG, triggerguard, CTR 6 position buttstock, and covers for the M-LOK forend. Also included are rail sections and a full military cleaning kit. Add ammo and you’re ready to go. This rugged, battle grade, rifle has an MSRP of $1,900 but street price seems to be around $1,600.
