I had never heard of Extar USA before I was asked to review the EP9 Carbine. I was intrigued by the gun’s unique design, as well as its price tag, so I agreed to check it out. I am glad I did, because the EP9 pleasantly surprised me with how friendly it is for newer shooters, younger kids, and teaching purposes. The gun operates on a mass-delayed blowback system with the Extar Dynamic Mass Bolt and their Recoil Damper. With this combination, the carbine hardly has any felt recoil or dot bounce as a result. The downside of the gun for a competitive shooter like me is that the bolt has a long delay, which causes me to wait for the gun to cycle before I can fire a follow-up shot. But since that’s not the gun’s purpose, I don’t have any complaints about the way it cycles. The trigger is the one part I would change immediately, potentially followed by the grip angle and safety. These are also personal preferences, but because the gun is compatible with AR-15 parts, it makes it easy to change these parts. The EP9 is compatible with double-stack Glock magazines, features a Picatinny rail, and is threaded for suppressor use. It is also accurate and reliable with different types of ammunition. Overall, I was impressed with the value offering of the Extar EP9.
