In our first BB, the Surgeon Scalpel laid down the best group of all the rifles. Every shooter shot it well under .5 MOA, with one evaluator shooting his best ever group of his life, never having interacted with the rifle before. So that makes us wonder what changed with the Surgeon since then.
This sample has all the cool parts: a 591 action, which is superb and bomb proof, and a Magpul Pro 700 chassis, which while seriously underrated is a top do-all bed for the barreled action. A Trigger Tech trigger makes sure that brand holds the majority stake in all these rifles. It’s chambered in 6mm Creedmoor like 90 percent of the contenders, but we believe there is something in the barrel that doesn’t allow it to shine.

“The profile is too thin,” was a common statement traded by all of us. Our super-user, Dave, shot it well, while the rest of us struggled to get decent groups out of it. It just didn’t make sense. We also felt it lacked a little aesthetic pizzazz compared to many of the other rifles in the bunch. This could be remedied by adding the Magpul NV rail, which they should include with the rifle.
We think the Surgeon needs a heavier profile barrel with a stainless finish to bring it up a couple of notches across the board. The MSRP is quite low for a Surgeon, though, coming in at under $3,500. That would be an absolute steal with a different barrel and improved precision. There is just no other explanation we have for it not being better.
It’s not that it’s bad, it’s just that with the Surgeon name we expect more, and this is a dressing room full of other supermodels.
