The FN Self-Loading Police (SLP) shotgun first appeared in 2008. It was built from the ground up to compete. Three-Gunners were quick to embrace this well-designed beauty, which is capable of firing eight rounds in a second. Our best split was 0.15 seconds, but we aren’t as quick as some of the pros. We also the loved SLP MK I’s simplicity. The bolt locks to the rear whenever the magazine is empty—no need to press a button to lock it to the rear. There’s a safety button and a bolt release. That’s it.

The FN SLP MK I comes with an extended magazine tube for a total capacity of 8+1 shells. Thus, it had the greatest capacity of all of the guns we tested, so I affectionately dubbed it “That damn Belgian shotgun that you load on Sunday and shoot all week long.” It also utilizes a fiber-optic front sight and a folding, adjustable V-notch rear sight. I love this sight system because it lends itself to both precise shots and tracking moving targets in a way that a ghost ring or a simple bead sight does not. The gun swings and points very easily, like a traditional shotgun.

Again, there were zero malfunctions with any of the ammo we threw at it. Everyone commented that the trigger felt light, but not “too light.” The single critique comes from the notch in the shell lifter. If you are sloppy when you thumb shells in, it will catch and pin your thumbnail, and then you’ll cry like a Nancy Boy.
