The most surprising entry in the category has to be something that no one saw coming—the new FN High Power. While other companies were stepping in to fill the void when the original Hi-Power was discontinued, FN was busy revamping the entire design for the modern user. While retaining some of the signature elements of the original, like the SAO operating system and keyhole muzzle profile, the new High Power integrates several improvements for a better user experience.

One of the most important upgrades was the removal of the magazine-disconnect safety. This allows magazines to drop freely for quicker reloads and it also improves the trigger pull significantly as compared to the original Hi-Power. There is also a new take-down latch that speeds up the disassembly process and is similar to the take-down of a striker-fired pistol.

The all-steel High Power also had some work done to its frame, including a redesigned grip tang and hammer to reduce that dreaded hammer bite during recoil. Other modern touches are present on the High Power like an ambidextrous thumb safety, ambi slide stop and a reversible magazine release. However, there’s currently no accessory rail available, nor is there a slide cut to mount an optic.

Another substantial improvement over the original is the 17+1 capacity of the new High Power. Also present are premium features found on most FN pistols, such as the cold-hammer-forged barrel, recessed target crown and polished chamber and feed ramp for exceptional reliability. The High Power is available with a black or FDE PVD finish, or it is available with an all-stainless finish for a clean and all-business appearance.
