New to Sig Sauer’s lineup this year is the Spartan II. Cosmetically, it’s like nothing else I have ever handled. It features a tough “Distressed Coyote” finish on the stainless steel slide and frame along with “Molon Labe” (in Greek letters) and a Spartan helmet emblazoned on the slide. Even the custom aluminum grips feature a Spartan helmet in profile. It truly is a very handsome and distinctive gun.

The .45 ACP Spartan II features the fit we’ve become accustomed to with Sig Sauer guns. The slide-to-frame fit is near perfect, and the gun is outfitted with an ambidextrous thumb safety with levers that are extended but not so obnoxiously wide as to make them painful for carry use. The gun also has a checkered frontstrap, low-profile tritium sights for low-light shooting, a two-piece magazine well for quick reloads and an accessory rail for lights and lasers. Our test sample’s trigger was heavy at 5.25 pounds, but it was so crisp it felt lighter. It had a firm take-up and reset, and the overtravel was adjusted to perfection.

Not surprisingly, in testing the average group size for the Spartan II was under 1.25 inches. The best five-shot groups for the Aguila, Black Hills and Hornady loads were 1.38, 1.06 and 1.2 inches, respectively.Sig’s Spartan II is one of those guns that will make you the envy of your shooting buddies. Its distinctive look and “Molon Labe” theme demand attention, and the Spartan II shoots as well as it looks and performs exactly the way you need it to.
