Ruger has recently introduced a versatile package with the new Ruger American Rimfire model (#8370) in .22 WMR. There’s a lot to like about this rifle with its feature set, especially for the relatively low MSRP of $509. It features a detachable 15-round magazine, a Picatinny rail to mount just about any optic you can imagine, and the cold-hammer-forged, 16.5-inch barrel is threaded for use with a suppressor if you so desire.

More standard features include a swappable stock module that can be switched out to change the length of pull or the comb height. Ruger also includes its Marksman trigger that can be adjusted for the weight of the trigger break in the range of three to five pounds. There’s a tang safety that in easy reach for both left- and right-handed shooters. And while the stock is more modern with a FDE synthetic make-up, the barrel is blued for a more classic look.

Despite its compact form factor and relatively short barrel length, the Ruger American Rimfire model reviewed proved very accurate. It consistently shot groups in the .5 to .75-inch range at 50 yards with a variety of ammunition, and still well under an inch at 75 yards with its preferred loads. Lightweight and easy to carry, the compact #8370 model proved exceptionally reliable with a nice action and sure feeding from the extended magazine.

Ruger packs a lot of value and versatility in this package. It can be your pest-control rifle for around the house and farm or you can keep it as a kit gun for camp or trail. Looking for a way to spend a Sunday afternoon? The Ruger American Rimfire is just as fun as it is practical, and an afternoon of popping bottles and cans with that satisfying magnum thump will make you feel like a kid all over again.
