The Taurus Model 817 was produced from 1999-2006, and was originally a 21 oz. Ultra-Lite model .38 Special with a 2-inch barrel, and 7-shot cylinder. For 2025 the Model 817 has been reincarnated as a 2-inch barrel, 7-shot cylinder 38 Special +P in matte-finished stainless-steel, with an empty weigh of 30.26 oz. What you get is 16.67% more firepower in a DA revolver that’s only 0.25-inches wider than most 5-shot .38 snubs. Other specs include an O/A length of 8.0-inches, a replaceable front sight and fixed rear sight, plus black finger-groove rubber grips, pebble-textured on both sides. The heavy barrel has a full underlug and integral rib on top. Lock-up points for the fluted cylinder are at the rear and on the crane or yoke. With this arrangement, you get a longer ejector rod.
